The Wish Ambulance: Giuseppe's Last Dream to See the Sea

Confined by ALS, Giuseppe had one last wish: to breathe the sea air. Moving him seemed impossible, but Abacus's "Wish Ambulance" volunteers defied all risk. They brought him to the Ligurian coast, proving that even at life's end, dignity and dreams prevail.

The Wish Ambulance: Giuseppe's Last Dream to See the Sea

Sometimes, in 🇮🇹 Italy, human angels drive ambulances and go to the sea (for Love).

This is the story of Giuseppe’s last dream and how a group of amazing souls went the extra mile to make it come true. Giuseppe is an Italian man living with advanced ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). This illness slowly takes away a person’s ability to move, speak, and even breathe. It’s also about a group of Italian volunteers, called Associazione Abacus Onlus. They are pure human angels who believe everyone deserves hope and dignity until the end.

Founded with a mission to provide compassionate support to those in need, they offer important social and healthcare services. Their core belief is that everyone deserves attention, care, and the chance to realize their deepest wishes and dreams. As part of their endeavors, they run a special project called the "Wish Ambulance" (In Italian: L’Ambulanza dei Desideri).

Usually, medical transport is only for emergencies, but the Wish Ambulance does something different. The Abacus volunteers, many of whom are trained rescuers and nurses, have a clear mission: if a seriously ill or terminal patient has a final wish—a “desiderio”—Abacus will do everything possible to make it come true.

The volunteers give their time, skills, and a fully equipped ambulance, not just to rush someone to the hospital, but to bring joy on a special journey. One volunteer, Maria, shared her thoughts on this unique experience. 'It's not just about reaching a destination. It's about the bond we form during the journey,' she said. 'Being able to fulfill someone’s last wish is something that touches your soul and reminds you of why we do this.' This personal connection fuels their passion and commitment, turning each trip into a meaningful mission.

Giuseppe’s Final Plea

🌊
For Giuseppe, who was confined to his bed and room, one memory still felt alive: the sea.

He had lived his whole life by the water, with the smell of salt and the sound of waves a part of him. Now, his illness made even small movements impossible, and he needed a ventilator to breathe. Knowing his time was short, his last request was simple: to breathe the sea air one more time.

The request seemed huge, maybe even risky. Moving a patient with advanced ALS, who needs complex life support and constant care, over a long distance is a big challenge with many risks. But for the Abacus volunteers, this is what they are meant to do.

The Journey to Liguria

The Abacus team got to work. They planned every part of the trip from Giuseppe’s home to the Ligurian coast on the Italian Riviera.

The Wish Ambulance became a safe place on wheels. Inside, the volunteers made sure Giuseppe felt comfortable and cared for. They managed his ventilator, checked his vital signs, and, most importantly, spoke to him with kind words and gentle hands. They turned a medical trip into something special.

Breathing the Sea

When they reached the Ligurian coast, it was a special moment. The volunteers carefully brought Giuseppe, along with his bed and ventilator, right to the edge of the water. And there it was.

❤️
The sun was shining. The waves made their gentle sound. Giuseppe, breathing with the help of a machine, could feel the sea on his skin. He didn’t need to say anything. The look in his eyes and the calm on his face said it all. He breathed in the salty air, the profumo del mare, one last time.

This was a true act of love and care, made possible by the Abacus volunteers who believe that people facing death deserve peace, dignity, and the chance to fulfill their dreams. Giuseppe’s last trip showed the deep humanity behind the Wish Ambulance, proving that even at the end, there is still room for beauty in life.

It’s true: sometimes, human angels drive ambulances, bring hope, and fill hearts with their Love.
