Have you ever experienced the presence of a deceased loved one after their passing?
It may happen through dreams, feeling sensations, or even hearing a meaningful song on the radio during a stressful day. Your loved ones have many reasons for returning to visit, and you don't need to be a medium to experience it. This type of communication can happen anywhere and anytime, but it's most common when you're alone and aware of your surroundings.
Whether you're fully awake, in a twilight state of dreaming and waking, or in the dream state, your deceased loved ones may be trying to connect with you.
Here's a list of the most common ways your loved ones may use to visit you. Remember, you're not alone; these experiences can be incredibly inspirational.
1. Dream visitations
This is the most common way to be visited by those in Spirit, both by deceased loved ones and Spirit Guides. While you may talk yourself out of a 'Spirit visitation' dream even if you've had one, these dreams differ significantly from regular dreams.
In Spirit visitation dreams, a deceased loved one often enters the dream and is surrounded by some light. In the dream, while they may talk to you or ask you to deliver messages, they will usually offer some comfort that they are okay, everything is peaceful, and that they made it to the Other Side comfortably.
2. Sensing their presence
Many people report sensing the presence of their loved ones around them after their passing.
You might notice a shift when they are around – either a change in the energy or actual movement in the air. Perhaps at night, you notice pressure in the bed next to you, as if someone got into bed with you, or you might feel like someone is sitting next to you in the evenings while you read a book. This is a common type of visit. If you were very close with the person you feel is visiting, and you noticed their presence while they were alive – you still have this ability after they have shifted from physical into Spirit form.
They are the same essence they were with the body, and now, without a body.
3. Feeling their touch
A hug, a brush of your hair, holding your hand, or a gentle touch on your back are some of the most comforting forms of connection.
Feeling their touch is most common sense in the days directly following your deceased loved one's passing. However, some of those in Spirit continue to visit long after their passing, using the ability of perceived touch. This ability to touch can also manifest in feeling them not touch you but an object near you, for instance, noticing someone sitting or lying in bed next to you.
4. Smelling their fragrance
The ability to smell the fragrance from a deceased loved one or Spirit is called clairgustance.
These visits are commonly reported as the fragrance of cigarette or cigar smoke, perfume, flowers, or cooking. So if you smell cigar smoke, and no one smokes in your house except your deceased grandfather – chances are, it's him, and he's letting you know he's around, visiting, and saying hello.
5. Hearing their voice
This is called clairaudience. It is possible to hear the voice of your deceased loved one externally, as though they are speaking to you in human form or internally, through thought or word transference. Internal clairaudience is the most common way to 'hear a voice, as the hearing happens inside your mind. Why? Those in Spirit no longer have a voice box - so creating an external noise is very hard.
Do you talk to your husband, grandmother, or best friend on the Other Side of your mind?
Take a moment, and wait to see if you can hear a response. Usually, you can.
6. Unexpected electrical activity
We all have energy, which runs through everything, including electrical devices.
For those on the Other Side, not only is it fun to learn how to use energy to connect - many of those in Heaven know that the power in electrical devices is relatively easy to manipulate.
For this reason, it is common for those in Spirit to manipulate TV, lights, and toys to get your attention. They can turn things on and off, change channels, and make things move.
Songs on the radio that are meaningful to you or your lost loved one are a favorite way for those on the Other Side to deliver messages that you may need to hear - right at that moment, with electricity.
7. A phone call
The day after my father passed over, I received several phone calls, from unknown numbers, with nothing but static on the other line. While discussing this event with friends, they recounted similar experiences in the days following the passing of their loved ones. Since a phone is an electrical object, manipulating the energy to make a phone call is not much different than other electrical activities. Although this sign could occur in the months or years following the crossing of a loved one, it is most common in the immediate days following the transition.
8. Receiving a symbolic message, sign, coincidence, or synchronicity
Your deceased loved ones are often eager to let you know they are part of your life and with you when you least expect it.
While many people can feel their deceased loved ones watching over them, sometimes, it's hard to be that wise or to be sure that what we felt was what we thought it was. So, those in Spirit will provide us with signs we cannot ignore. Once you receive this type of sign, time and time again, you will know this is a message from the Other Side – and don't let anyone else tell you otherwise!
The signs can and will come to you in various ways, and the key is to keep your eye open for synchronicities and anything out of the ordinary.
Sometimes, those in Spirits will move objects to get your attention. For example, does the same photograph keep falling? Is the same thing always being 'misplaced' or 'lost' in your possession? Consider this method of communication, as it is most commonly sent to those whose attention it's hard to reach. Also, moving objects often create noise, which can startle your awareness!
10. Seeing an apparition (flat photo, hologram, partial, complete)
Believe it or not, seeing an apparition while you are awake, with your eyes open, is one of the least common methods on this list. Though it's the most widely cited in popular media, it's rare due to its shock value.
Many people find that visits from their loved ones are common and plenty in the days, weeks, and months following a loved one's passing, but they can continue for years. This happens when you have a child, soulmate, or life partner pass away early on, and they stay with you until you both finish your soul path in this life. This is normal.
True "visitation dreams" are very easy to identify because they are very different from "everyday dreams." Characteristics of most (but not all) visitation dreams include the following:
The essential characteristic of a true visitation dream is that it feels "real." It will also be very vivid.
If you have to ask whether the visitation dream was a visitation dream, it was not. They are so natural and vivid that you won't have to ask this question. When you have a visitation dream, you may wonder if it was authentic; but in your heart or gut, you will "know" it was real.
Because they are so real and so vivid, you will remember visitation dreams very clearly for days, months, years . . . probably for your entire lifetime!
The person (or animal) will almost always appear wholly healthy and behave lovingly in the dream. They will rarely appear sick or injured. They will never be angry, disappointed, depressed, or punished. Instead, they will be "whole, complete, and perfect" because they are now reconnected with God/Source energy.
They will communicate whether or not they speak to you verbally in the dream. (NOTE: As you'll see in the following two examples, in neither of the dreams did actual verbal communication occur; the messages were telepathically conveyed and completely clear.)
When they communicate (either verbally or non-verbally), it isn't because they want to engage in idle "chit-chat." It isn't easy for deceased loved ones to enter a dream. They come with a purpose, will convey the message, and then be gone.
Most often, their messages fall into the category of "reassurance." They come to let you know they are okay and want you to be happy. Occasionally, they will come with a warning; however, when giving a sign, they will provide you with loving support, and you will feel reassured by their presence.
After a visitation dream, you will often be filled with peace and love when you wake up.
Can you ask for a visitation dream? Yes, you certainly can!
Before going to sleep, think about the deceased loved one and ask them to visit you in your dream state. Then, request your guides or other spiritual helpers to assist this person in coming to you.
However, please don't become discouraged if someone doesn't come to you. Of course, they want to, but there are many reasons why a deceased loved one may not show up when requested. For example, the soul may be relatively new at entering dreams and need to learn how to do it. Or your guides know that you want to know something that your deceased loved one can't tell you because you need to find the answer.
But there's no harm in asking them to visit with you! And when visitation dreams do occur, be sure to thank your deceased loved one for coming and send them love and gratitude for taking the time to visit with you.
